Books on B

What a fun painting this was to make! There are so many details that I tried to capture to share my experience of Books on B. Renee always in conversation with every customer who walks in. Here she is helping a customer at the counter while simultaneously welcoming the patron walking through the front door. My husband, the poet, looking over his favorite section for yet another addition to his home library. His stance is reminiscent of The Shade (L’Ombre), a sculpture by Rodin, one of my favorite sculptors. The handwritten signs atop the earring stand, a reminder of his time working as a bookseller. The Last Machine, facing outwards, short fiction written by @matthewisaacsobin, also available at @booksonb.

I really enjoyed recreating the painting of the chickens by Sarah Sammis and the hello sign on the wall. The packaged socks hanging under the counter were a wonderful challenge, and one of my favorite details are the receipts tucked into preorders like bookmarks inside half-read books.

This painting is currently on view at the Hayward Area Historical Society until June 13, then moves on to the Hayward Public Library from August 5 - October 3.

Memories Contained

Capturing a memory of companions. This is a collection of toys once guarded by Olive, a feisty poodle, and kept warm by Valerie, an elderly chihuahua. Two sweet girls who brought me so much joy.
